The idea for a submissions manager tailored to the needs of a small press has been kicking around the office of our own small press for years. It was an idea born out of equal parts necessity and frustration‑frustration at the lack of choices out there; and necessity, due to the high subscription rate of the prevailing choice available to publishers both big and small. In an attempt to address both of these issues, we enlisted the help of family and friends to design and bring STACK to market. It is truly a unique tool, in that, it is user‑friendly and intuitive, offering only those features that are necessary to keep a small press organized, and most importantly, it can be offered at an affordable, flexible price. If you are a publisher who is tired of paying a high monthly subscription rate for features that you neither need nor use, then you are in the right place.
On the other side of the equation, if you are an author looking for convenient access to small presses that are looking for your work, then you are also in the right place. We do not charge authors any fees to set up an account or submit their work to publishers listed on STACK. Authors can see the various projects listed by small presses and can submit and communicate directly with those presses through their accounts. In STACK, you can see where you’ve submitted, see the status of all those submissions, and communicate with the presses you have submitted to. In a word, it can all be done in one place. And most importantly, STACK is simple and user‑friendly. We think you are going to like it‑a lot.
Authors do NOT pay a fee to STACK for registering and using the submission tool. However, Publishers may charge authors a submission fee. Please check submission guidelines closely as such fees will be noted there.
For publishers, the payment model for STACK is a hybrid of subscription and pay-to-play. It is intended to keep payments low so that smaller Publishers will have access to a submissions manager. Publishers will likely use some combination of these two payment modes in order to pay the smallest amount.
Mode 1) Monthly payments. Monthly payments amount to $10/month with unlimited submissions.
Mode 2) Pay-per-submission. Pay-per-submissions amount to 10 cents per submission with unlimited submissions.
Here's how the hybrid works: Publishers will pay using either Mode 1 or Mode 2 each month, depending on which amount is the smallest. For example, if a publisher has 25 submissions in one month, it would follow Mode 2 and pay $2.50. If the publisher has 200 submissions the next month, it would follow Mode 1 and pay $10. If the publisher has no submissions (perhaps is closed) over the next two or three months, it would pay $0 for those months.
